In this third and final post about culture concerns, I want to highlight three books-one published in 2022, one in 1942 and one as old as time (literally!). All three books have clarity and insight into our current cultural climate.
First, Faithfully Different: Regaining Biblical Clarity in a Secular Culture by Natasha Crain. The audiobook is read by the author, which I always love! In Faithfully Different, Crain offers a very practical and measured approach to navigating life in a world where having a true biblical worldview is not the norm anymore. In some cases, those who do face hostility and rejection. This
shouldn't be a surprise to those of us who have committed to following Christ. Jesus said in John 16:33, "In this world you will have trouble..." But, it's eye-opining to realize that many of the ways biblical worldview is attacked is in the form of a more subtle messaging that sounds nice but isn't Biblical. The author explains secular culture's belief system this way: feelings are the ultimate guide, happiness is the ultimate goal, judging is the ultimate sin, and God is the ultimate guess. She goes on to break down each of these statements and explain the ways they have crept into culture and influence even well-meaning Christians. This book is a great read for Christians who want to better understand people who have a different worldview and regain Biblical clarity.
Second, The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. In true C.S. Lewis fashion, this book written 80 years ago is still so relevant. Lewis is one of the best storytellers of all time! The Screwtape Letters is a series of imagined letters written back and forth between two demons, Wormwood and his uncle Screwtape. Screwtape is a sort of mentor to Wormwood as he attempts to make his "patient" abandon God. Screwtape gives all kinds of advice on how to get the patient to reject faith in God. Throughout the book the letters reveal truths about human nature and the ways in which we are tempted to live for ourselves. In this way it reminds me of the words of Solomon, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 1:9) P.S. The narration in the audiobook format is superb!
Third, I could not write a book review designed to point at concerns in our culture without talking about the Bible! The words of Solomon ring true in that the Bible has story after story of cultures declining because of sin and a rejection of God. Throughout history, humans have rejected God's care and decided that they know best and don't need his guidance. The Bible is full of stories of flawed humans trying to make their own rules and making a mess of things. It is also a beautiful story of love and redemption. God's Word offers truth, clarity, and hope in a time of cultural confusion. Reading the Bible daily has transformed my life! If you're unsure where to start, here are a few suggestions: The Bible Recap, Bible Study Fellowship, The Daily Grace Co., and the YouVersion Bible app. Honestly, you could just pick up a Bible and start reading anywhere and you will find encouragement and hope!
